Default Can gaskets be installed upside down?

I'm talking mostly about the base gaskets. One side is "raised" and the other is "flat".

Which side up, or does it matter?

I just installed Cometic metal base gaskets and I don't think they would go but one way due to the dowel/alignement holes.
