Default Timing Issue

I have an80 inch 1996 flstn with an EV59, 11:1 or so compression and MegaFlow ported and polished heads with big valves, all dyno tuned. I had a problem with my Crane Hi-4 ignition and S&S replaced the module for me. Since then I've had a sputter or backfire while crusing mostly at lower rpms. I need some help getting this thing timed right! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check and clean all your connections, pay particular attention to any crimped connections and the grounds too. Don't forget the switches.

All connections are good, it's a timing issue i think. I can move the sputter/backfire up and down the rpm range by turning the module. It wants to load up when i'm not on it and then detonates like a champ!

Are you certain you got the VOES hooked up OK and don't have any vacuum leaks?

I've made it 45k miles without one, its not the missing voes.. It ran great before the new replacment ignition module. I just need some pointers on getting the timing right

With 11-1 compression, unless you are running race gas, it will run as good or better with the VOES. The VOES slightly retards the timing under hard acceleration only helping to prevent detonation. If you get a load of bad gas you will be glad you had it. It can also allow you to run a little more timing, thus giving you a little more performance in the end. Many people think it costs you horsepower, in truth it just gets you a little insurance. Now I agree it may not be the root of your current problem, but it's just a little good advice. Hope this helps.
