Default 89 FXR, Air cleaner adaptation?

I have looked everywhere and I cannot find an air cleaner kit for pre 1990 FXR's (Edit, pre 1993 EVO). Currently there is an S&S shorty on the bike and i want to switch back to the stock CV, and do not want to use the S&S cleaner with an adapter.

From what I have heard elsewhere the only real difference is the breather bolts???

Whats the trick here, how do I get a switched up air cleaner on this pig?

I see cross over years, 84-89 and then 89-94. this bike seems to be the red headed stepchild of the FXR

Shouldnt an XL kit fit? I just want something simple, like a black ness big sucker I

`89 model year big twins did not come with a CV carb, they came with the old butterfly type unit.

To mount a CV carb you will need a manifold, seals, seal retainers and bolts, and a backing plate for `90 or later. Also you will need a new air filter and cover designed for the CV, as the cover will have a cutout for the top of the CV carb.

The `93 and later backing plates are made to use larger diameter bolts, but will work fine on an older bike using the smaller diameter bolts, just use washers to make up for the difference.

If you use a backing plate for a `93 or later, you should also use the breather tubes that go over the mount bolts, even though they are not working as breather tubes, they will seal up the area of the mount bolts so unfiltered air cannot sneak by the filter. The breather tubes are cheap from the dealer.

You can scrounge most of this hardware up on ebay.

59215 is the kit I have on my case breather Evo. I had a hard time finding a stage one breather for it too. This is the only one still in production I could find. Your Harley dealership should be able to order for you, BUT......... RevTech had a huge QC screw up with these kits. All of them were packaged without 1 chrome bolt (no big deal) and the venturi. The venturi can be purchased from a Harley Dealership or elsewhere. I believe it's part #29179-88.

Yeah, i would like to step into the CV and get rid of the S&S, this is actually a very helpful response and I think i probably have most of that laying around, this will also work when I put the PM air cleaner on the 91 being built. but only partially considering its an HSR-42 with mikuni manifold...

Do wither of you think PN 31515 or 17398 (support brackets) would help with this mess?

Those are actually for installing flat backed air cleaner assemblies that don't have anything to support the carb. Remember, the carb is actually held tight to the intake manifold boot with the air cleaner.
If you purchase the kit I suggested, you won't need an additional support bracket as that kit has all the parts you'll need (except for the screw up that I mentioned).

I think I might just do a Mikuni complete kit and be done with it. even though it is a rat, it should still be fun to ride.
