ok so a little update, thanks to dr.hess's charging test. first i pulled the plugs and they look fine, not white not dark/oiley just a nice dry greyish, i checked voltage at the battery and im 12.8 with bike off not ran since yesterday, started bike and started with no problem, battery went up to 13.8-14.6, let it run with meter on and system is charging (passed the first test). so i let it warm all the way up and after about 30 min it shuts down on me, start it back up but it doesn't like throttle response dies out again this time it will not start again, let it cool down for 20 min and still would not start, tried to test the coil but nothing with key off, turned key on nothing, with bike running the meter fluctuates to much to get a reading, couldn't find my spark tester to check for spark so ill pick one up tommorrow, so if system is charging does that mean the stator is OK? bike sat for a couple years it was my dads until he passed away and he left it for me, the only things Ive done is drain tank and put new fuel, pulled carb and re-jetted to compensate for the exhaust and intake, new intake filter, new ignition switch, and new battery, like everyone i want my bike to be running for the summer just got a few little bugs to work out thanks again for everyone help.
p.s. bike is NOT a democrat/socialist and not looking for a hand out just looking for someone to share some knowledge, im the one with wrench busting and burning my knuckles.
Lets see, if the coil was going bad, it would still have power everywhere else. If the gas cap vent was bad it would start after a while, but you'd still have power everywhere else. If the grounds and cables are checking out ok, I would look at the main circuit breaker, or possibly the key switch. I had one go bad on my '93 Ultra and it was like someone stole the battery. No power at all.,,
If the coil was going bad , you'd still have power everywhere else. I would look for a loose cable and check the ignition switch for anything loose there. Last thing possibly the main circuit breaker could be getting hot and crapping out on you. If the problem gets to the point where the bike wont start at all, that may make it easier to find the cause.,,
Jesus, Nick. How many times you gonna post that? Another oft o'er look thing that can cause that issue is a blocked tank vent. As you draw fuel, a vacuum builds in the tank until fuel stops flowing. Crack the cap and it starts up and goes again. The more full the tank, the shorter ride before it stalls.
Sounds electrical. Check the connection where the voltage regulator plugs into the stator. This is a bad design, and will loosen and create a poor connection that will wreak havoc with your battery's ability to charge.
I beleive ha Dr Hess was about to say was you replaced your battery and bike ran fine until I'm assuming the bike ran the battery down to the point where lites went back down to dim and ignition wouldn't fire properly. Basicly the bike isn;t charging the battery up, old and new. Easy test is to put volt meter across the battery before you start it and after its running and see what you get. Dr Hess's diagnostic which is now posted and which many of us have for stand by is pretty thorough.
well i replied earlier but it said duplicate post and it was lost, to sum it up, it passed the charging test battery voltage is perfect 12.8 bike off and cold, running its between 13.8 and 14.5 but 30 min after running it shut down again and would not start so i let it cool for an hour and still no start, it cranks fine but no fire. if charging system is working does that mean the stator is good? im really leaning towards coil but let me know what you think cause i dont wanna just throw money at it, thanks again.
p.s. bike is not a democratic/socialist looking for a handout, it was my dads bike and he passed away, im the one with the wrench busting and burning my knuckles just looking for some knowledge to be passed along from fellow riders.
