Avon Venom is better then a Dunlopper on the rear although currently pulled a new Venom off the rear that is out of round, company I purchased it from is taking it back but the Venom is discontinued and going to try the new Cobra, we will see how it does.

Didn't like a Venom on the front, it was all over the road until it had couple hundred miles on it, unfortunatley I was in Sturgis and it danced all other the channeled highways until it broke in. If the new Cobra does ok will try a Cobra on the front next go around
1997bagger,
Thanks for the input on the Avon Venoms! I got my 97 RK fuel gauge on Ebay used. I believe it was either Pinwalls or rsipartsinc It took me a few months of searches on Ebay, until I located a fuel gauge. So yes; they are getting harder to find.

Well it looks as if J&P has the best prices on the Avon Venoms, using my Gold card membership. Just to be sure, I know the font Venoms I need for my 97 RK - will be MT90-16. According to the J&P catalog, the rears are size MT90-16 in the Venoms? The next size rear is a 140/90-16, which I think is too wide?

The difference between the MT (130) and the MU (140) is 10 mm.
I let a friend of mine talk me into putting in a MU and all I notice is that it is harder to slip into place.

Stick with the MT you won't gain anything by going to a MU.

By the way you can put a MU in there with no modifications.

Been following Ebay on the gauge, thinking about adapting a HD LED in it.

The 140 will go on easy if the wheel is centered in the fender, if offset to the left it comes real close to the belt and will slightly rub the tire when backing. Squeezed a 150 in the White Bike and could of built the space shuttle easier, stay with the stocker unless the wheel is centered but most of them are offset to the left.

1997bagger,
An LED in the fuel gauge would be the cats ***! Anyway; back to my tire question. The only Avon Venom's listed on J&P's site - are the Avon AM41 Venoms in MT90B16 in fronts only. Is it possible or safe, to mount a front listed tire on the rear? I am guessing no? If that is the case, I will have to get the rear Venom from another supplier.

On the subject of Venom tyres, they should be run at higher pressures than stock tyres, so do not go by the numbers in the owners manual. Use 38F/44R for both Venoms and Cobras, max pressure is 50psi.

Graham,
Thanks for that info! The front Avon Venom is on its way from J&P. I ordered the rear from Jireh, but they are back ordered as usual. I will have to locate another source for the rear tire. Anyway; some money will be trickling back to the UK (Avon is still based in the UK?) : )

Yes Bill, named after the River Avon, which meets the sea at the port of Bristol. Their UK website confirms tyre fitment and pressures and you can get to their US one from it. Owned by Cooper Tires these days, but still British old chap!!!!

My TC came with 402's and oddly enough, I know none you will believe this, but they are the best tyre in the wet I have ever run!! Shocked me silly it did...they grip like a pickpocket on a wallet and give the most feedback I have ever felt....and I have used every make of tyre you can name.

I have no idea what I will replace them with because they don't last all that long but usually longevity is inversely proportional to wet grip.....whatever that means....

Graham,
That's good to know! With most of all the old standard brands, being bought out by various conglomerates - it's hard to know who owns what these days : ( I have tried all the major cycle venders on the net, and none have the rear tire I need in stock - Venom X MT90H16. It appears that Avon had a sale this month, offering a $40 gift certificate or something, on the purchase of a set of tires. So; I will be waiting on the rear tire for awhile : (
