Question '89 FXRS carb

Hey fellas, I've stripped and cleaned the original carb and rebuilt with new kit.
All is well but I have a question about the idle mixture screw. Apparently this was sealed when new but wasn't when I got it. My question is about the spring below the screw. This mixture screw will bottom without compressing the spring (which seems very stiff) and of course has no spring pressure on it when backed out a turn or so. I think there should there be an "O" ring on the mixture screw as well. I have not found a parts breakdown of this carb so I hope someone could verify this. Thanks for any info Cooter

There are four total parts to the idle screw:
The idle screw itself
The spring
an o-ring
a small washer

Place the o-ring in the hole first, then the washer to protect the o-ring, then the spring, then the screw. If you don't have all those parts, you need to get them either from the HD dealer or from cvperformance.com. Also, don't overtighten the mixture screw as you can bugger-up the orifice pretty easily.

650 cooter,
Check out Ronnie's,
Select Harley OEM part finder
Select Motorcycle
They don't have the diagram for an 89 but the 85 has the butterfly diagram and you can use a later year if you have a cv.

Thanks Ronnie's
Cheers

For future upgrades, the best thing you can do to that bike will be to replace that POS carb with anything else. CV's are popular.

Guess that means you don't want the butterfly I just replaced
The CV makes a big difference makes the 85 feel be again, time to fix the speedo

I've got a box of them. I'm saving them for that time in the distant future when idiots want to restore a bike to "completely stock," even though "completely stock" didn't work. You see these tendencies in car show circles, with Corvette and Jaguar people being the worst.

Something that helps me when I'm taking something apart that I'm not completely familiar with, is take pics. I take a new pic with every part I remove. Especially helpful at the end of the job if I have a part or 2 left.
Since nearly everyone has a phone w/camera nowadays, it should be a pretty common practice.
