Default oil consumption on a 98 fxdl

oil changed about 1100 miles ago, checked once at about 600 miles .(level was good). checking today its 1 quart down only about 1100 miles into it. 12k on the bike ridden up to 90mph for a bit. above 70 about half the 1100 miles .normal ? the twin cam didn't mind but maybe the evo does? ps runs like a champ. pulls two up all day long.

That might be a bit excessive, most of the evos I've owned have used a little oil here and there, check to see if its smoking on start up or while riding, have a buddy follow you at night and look for the hint of smoke in the headlights

With 82,000 miles on this motor, my bike's oil consumption varies with how hard it's ridden and how hot the weather is. Below 80 degrees, oil consumption is negligible. Over 80 and she'll use a bit of oil as it thins out (HD 20w-50). On the whole, it uses between 8 and 12 ounces in 2000 miles.

HD manual states that the EVO can use up to 1 (one) quart in 500mi and be considerate normal consumption depending on the riding conditions.

So if you are riding it hard and in hot conditions I'd say that was better than the minimum acceptable.

Check for black and oily exhaust pipes, and any leaks. If not present then I'd forget about it, and just keep checking oil level within one minute of shutdown. Just in case the check ball is leaking and allowing oil to drain down into the crankcase.

the trick is: finding out where its going. I battled oil consumption for a while. eventually, mind needed a tear down (toasted a piston)....but until the very end...thats not where it was going lol.

you're either losing it through a leak (you'd see one that big), through the breathers, or past the rings (could be valve guide seals too, but it'd smoke like a bastard if that was the case)

stock intake? (stock setups vent oil blowby through the breathers back into the intake, so you'd likely never notice it). I replaced my umbrella valves, and drilled the drain holes in the middle rocker box cover to 1/8" (recommended by tech support @ S&S, was installing roller rockers at the time)

past that, you could do a leakdown test. thats what I did, and it confirmed my suspicions.

My other 98 convertible used EXACTLY a quart every 1000 miles and didn't smoke one drop AND didn't leak a drop either! Went to florida on it, just took 3 extra quarts of oil with me...lol
