Default speedo: replace or upgrade?

I've got a dead or dieing speedometer on my '99 FLSTC. I was riding and the speedometer kept dropping down to zero. The next time I rode the bike the speedometer stuck at 38 MPH, and is still stuck, even with the bike shut off. The odometer was so bled out it was useless anyway.

So I figure I'll clean the connections in the wire harness this weekend and see if that brings it back. But my conundrum is if it needs replacing, do I buy a used OEM gauge off eBay for around $100, a new OEM from whoever for $200, or do I buy an aftermarket with more features and better looks for $400.

The odometer on and OEM is going to bleed out and be worthless within 10 years, so I am hesitant to stick with a faulty design.

I just don't want to spend $400. I would like to find an aftermarket design that is more affordable.

Anyone come across an affordable alternative to the OEM speedo?

Had an "affordable" aftermarket - the nostalgia style, with tacho in it. Brand new. Broke in two years, same way as yours. Now I got the stock one back, and very happy with it.
I'd say find an OEM one in decent shape.

i went with a Dakota Digital

not quite in the "affordable" category, but i'm happy with it nonetheless

My buddy has one he's been running on his Dyna for 8 or 9 years now....never a hiccup

I'm fairly sure we had someone post details of a firm that services speedos. Worth taking a look with 'search'.

Thanks for the tip GRBROWN!

I searched the forums and found this:

I emailed them, so we'll see.
