Im sure many Evo (& newer model !!)owners have discovered rust on the Frame at some point. I have discovered rust (holed!) on the main Frame down where the S.Arm is bolted. Just wondered if a new "plate" can be welded over the old section in situ. or does engine have to come out.
If new plate can be welded without engine coming out could there be a prob. with electrics whilst welding. I wont be welding it myself.
Any suggestions or ideas much appreciated. Bungo
I am thinking you mean the tubing has rusted through when you wrote "(holed!)."
Personally, I would try a plate if that is the only spot but there is a possibility that the wall dimension is compromised in other spots as well and while welding the plate in place you may have spots where the thinned wall will burn through.
If other spots do not burn through when installing the plate, then I'd ride it but inspect it regularly.
I did describe area where rust is ...."on mainframe near Swinging Arm bolts".
I thought most Evo owners would know the area I was talking about, however you may be correct in saying that "this topic is worthless without pics. ".
I will take a picture and highlight the area where the rust is.
Thank you kindly for your response and have a nice day. Kind regards,Bungo.

Thank you for reply. Yes it has "rusted through" as you say.
It isnt on the tubing but is on the large/flat "support bracket" section where the tubing is joined.
This "support bracket" probably adds strength to the Swinging Arm.
I will be posting a pic. tomorrow. Bungo

It was rust holes on my 1996 EG in the same place near swingarm bolt. Mechanic in our local service welded new plates without engine removal. I suppose it was "lapidary" work but he did it so good that frame looks like original.
I think he covered engine and other parts when did welding works

Hi to you in Latvia. Can you remember what gauge of metal you used for the plate & did your mechanic weld over the old plate or cut out anything. Bungo.
