My 107 Ultima has recently had some of the issues.
At first the bike would shut itself off, like I hit the kill switch. If i turn the kill switch off, and on it refires. I have done it while in motion. This progressed more frequently and on our last trip, actioning the kill switch to refire the bike has shot flames (at dusk) out of the pipes.
Eventually the bike ran extremely rough. I replaced the plugs... burned out from the refire, and superficially checked the wiring.
I replaced the VOES but have not set it to 7hg yet. The bike is still shutting itself off... but runs somewhat better.
I now suspect the coil/ignition is faulty.
Should I get a programmable digital ignition. Utlima recommends not connecting the VOES when using their ignition.
Since I have replaced the VOES, but never set it to 7 hg. Could the VOES not being set properly turn the ignition off?
Voes is more of a safety net, not a shut down item. The Ultima module is a good system but the coils fail like a fat lady on a diet in a donut shop. Electrical items breakdown from heat and start failing, going to say by a temporary shutdown, the coil is cooling off to refire and alot cheaper than the module.
Definitely you should start with the coil replace. Ultima coils are quite a crap. I have had a coil failure with somewhat similar simptoms on my 107 month ago. I've already had a Daytona Twin Tec ignition set (bought it for future as i've heard about possible Ultima ignition issues when i was buying an engine) so took the coil from it as first step to fix the problem and all the issues are gone. Bike runs smooth.
BTW. I have a disconnected VOES like Ultima suggests in the engine manual.

I talked to Midwest, where I got the Engine From (Im in Canada)... they are sending me a new ignition. He thinks the heat sync is shutting down.
Plas... is that Daytona Twin Tech programmable?... The VOES really smooths the engine out once it kicks in and advances the ignition. What benefits have you noticed with the VOES removed. I will likely adjust mine to 7hg... depending on how the bike runs with the new ignition.
Yes, DTT unit is programmable but i didn't istall it yet.
I've just remove the VOES while swapping engine as Ultima suggests so don't know the benefits :-) I know how it works but i don't think i really need it.
1) replace the ignition being sent to me by Midwest... see if that helps... if not replace coil. (I thought Cran went Broke). My coil is Harley Stock coil, and have read these have various issues as well.
2) wrap the pipe around the nose cone with heat sheild...
But what about the VOES... I have heard people say disconnect it... others say reset it to 7hg.... what does the engine run like without it? What type of mpg ?
