FXLR chain to belt conversion
I posted recently about my 1993 FXLR, rescued and rebuilt.
It came with a chain drive, and you respectable people suggested it should have been belt drive.
I sourced a 65t rear pulley, and fitted a 29t front pulley, with a 1 1/2 belt.
The front pulley would not clear the inner primary, so we had to machine some off to fit.
After a lot of messing around, the bike is back on the road, and after 150 miles today, i can only say things went well, though i am still looking for the elusive 6th gear, but i do that on my 2006 sportster as well.
Fuel consumtion for 56 mliles was 4.46 lt, or a one gallon in real money.
Sitting at 75 mph, i pulled the trigger and the bike leapt like a scalded cat to 100 mph very quickly.
Overall very pleased with the result.
Once again, could this have been a late chain drive, that was not registerd until 1993 ?
Not sure what you mean by "not registered until 1993" but, 1983 is when they came out with belt drive and continued until the final one rolled off the production line. Looking at you forks, they appear to be 39mm which means it is a later belt drive version. Check the VIN to determine the production date if you're unsure.
No more chain cleaning.
The small fairing was a saturday bodge job, had a tatty old Arlen ness Fairing, so got to work with a dremmell. Did not want a screen, just something to push air over me at 75/80 mph, on the motorway/freeway.
Made the fairing sprayed it black and fitted it to the front upper forks.
The bonus was it went around the headlight really neat.
was not sure what it would look like, but ive had some nice comments, and it suits the bike.
