Sounds like your main circuit breaker is tripping out. Try disconnecting the starter and see if it still does it, you may have a sort or a bad starter.
Cheers

Yep that is what it sounds like to me too.
Get a new one (they are cheap) and see what happens.

Of course we are talking about the starter relay.

I ran my multimeter across and read nothing I un hooded the starter and it didn't screw up so I guess the starter is bad .I cant understand why the power goes away when the starter is bad though on my shovel it always made a weird noise or sumthing but no power to anything and the fact that it just up and quit it baffles me

Start relay won't turn off the headlight.

Push the starter button, let the system kick itself off. Now start on one end or the other with your multimeter and find where the +12V stops. For example, with everything tripped off, black lead on a known good ground or the battery negative, red lead: Touch the + on the battery. 12.xV? Touch the solenoid terminal with the battery lead. +12V? Touch the main circuit breaker (wherever it is, it's under the seat on my bike) both sides. +12V on both? Tell us what you get with those tests and we'll go from there.

Hey doc I thought the center pin on the relay shut off the headlight while starting.

Was I wrong?

Hey THC,
Mine doesn't. If yours does, they either changed in inbetween the years or someone modded it. One of the suggestions for avoiding The Dreaded Click is to add a relay to turn off the headlight when there's no oil pressure by having the relay controlled by the oil pressure light. That way when you are cranking it, the headlight is off.

See post 10 in the adding a relay sticky.

This was being discussed by two people way smarter than me.
