Well, to be fair the SEs got rid of the noise too, until they started failing. I replaced the second failure on the road with a new stock lifter (no SE replacement available) and got lifter noise again. After I got home I went with the fuelings. Asking around some of the other indies, it seems to be a fairly common thing with the EV27. If you don't mind lifter noise, then by all means run the stock lifters.

I reckon you have oil pressure issues and that is causing the noise.

The extra lifter noise from an EV27 is pretty minimal and easily ignored....there are plenty of other reasons for an Evo to make a racket.

I like my stock '93 softail at 2.94. Plenty of grunt and will go 120 all day.

Why did I know you'd say that? Oil pressure is just fine.

One set of lifters noise, another set of lifters quiet. Must be the oil pressure. Yeah, that makes sense.

Well what would leaving the ev27 gear on do I wonder? Would I benefit at all? Like you and I said "its a bolt in cam" I don't see how it could harm anything. Right?

From the Andrews web site:

To make sure that your new camshaft drive gear will operate quietly, the cam gear to pinion backlash must be correctly set up. Proper backlash is .0000/.0005 for a cold engine. Andrews Products recommends that BOTH the new gear and the original gear be measured as described on the last page of these instructions. If both gears measure within .0005" of the same size, it should NOT be necessary to change gears. If a different size gear is required, Andrews Products has them. Excess backlash will cause gear noise which sounds like loose lifters but will not hurt anything. Insufficientbacklash will cause a distinct gear whine and should be corrected since gear tooth damage will result over a short time period.

Cams and timing gears should be matched.
There is a color code but when I got my EV-27 there was no color on it.

I just put it in and for the first 5k miles I had a whining sound.
I now have about 30k since installing the cam and no problems.
It was a seriously irritating sound though.
I did this about 2 years before I found this forum.

What you are doing by putting the stock cam gear on the 27 is insuring the cam gear and timing gear match and that is all.

Bolt in means you don't have to change anything else. Such as valves or valve springs or lifters or whatever.

Gear supplied with EV27 should be equivalent to a red dot on a stock one.

That other dude is still talking rubbish....EV27 works with stock lifters, end of story...I have never fitted a 27 or a 46 with anything else.

Spanner you just shimmed your stock needle and that was it for carb adjustments?
