Default Muffler temperature..

The mufflers on my 87 Bagger are showing there age, chrome scratched and just getting ugly.

I am planning on using VHT wrinkle black paint that has a working temp of 350 degrees. I know the head pipes get very hot but was told the mufflers stay around 250 degrees? Any opinions?

Thanks in advance..

Mark

Yeah. My opinion is to replace the whole exhaust system with a stock one from a twinkie up to 2008. Otherwise, I think the mufflers don't get that hot and you should be fine with the VHT stuff.

Thanks Doc,
I have some future plans for another exhaust system for the Spring of 2014, but for now a temporary fix.

Thanks

I have used the wrinkle paint many times in the past, I really like the finish. In my experience, you need to bake the finish on or you don't really get the best wrinkle or full heat resistance. Nothing fancy, I use the oven, it works great but really upsets the wife.

I have an oven in my shop for just such an emergency. As a bachelor, you can get away with things like baking the oil out of clutch plates, but somehow, that all changes.

One of these days, I'll get an oven in my shop also. Until then, I guess I'll just continue to hide from wifey.

I sanded down the gear case cover and applied the wrinkle paint with the three heavy coats and used my heat gun, worked great.

The same with the mufflers but thinking of a way to spray and place them temporary back on the bike and let the exhaust heat wrinkle the paint, these are way to big for the kitchen oven. Good grief she would freak out!

Or, the oven! Just let her freak out. If your ol' lady needs a support group, I'm sure she can call mine

A neighbor and I killed a rattle snake and baked it in his wifes oven. That was bad.
