I now have a baseline but I don't know what it means.
Today Faribault HD had a pig roast and Dyno Shootout so we rode down there today to check the scene. The Heritage has never been on a Dyno so I thought WTF. $25 to enter.
My numbers were 76 HP and 89 TQ.
I talked to the mechanic that was on it for the dyno and he said she's tuned perfectly but are you running these pipes (VH Long Shots) without baffles? I said yes. He said your numbers would be quite a bit higher if you just put some baffles in, it's starving for some back pressure.
Damn. I really liked that sound...the loud annoying pipes, the overrun on decal and shifting...but alas, the man said to put them in and I do as I'm told.
So I video'd the whole thing which was cool but I also got to see by bike fall apart right in front of my eyes. My air cleaner cover vibrated loose, my saddlebag guard/rear highway bars were both vibrated loose and both passenger footpeg bolts were loose. GEEZUS
So what did I learn? Running on the Dyno is HARD on a old girl!! It also taught me that I need to recheck all my Loctite and tighten this thing up! Everything is put back together, nothing fell off on the way home. I just put the baffles in...I've never had them in the pipes....and she's quiet. It's sort of gross to listen to after the monster I'm used to. I took her out to light it up a bit and while the sound is very different, either I'm crazy or it's true...the bike pulled harder and ran better. No decal pop, no nuthin, just a solid (quieter) 17 year old Heritage.
I'll get used to the sound, I'm thankful that I got to witness the vibration of parts so I could fix them up and generally speaking the numbers don't mean much to me but it was exhilarating to hear and see but it's possible that I gained some humility on the loud pipes and gained some HP and TQ. My *** dyno says yes.
No it's not stock. it's got a Andrews EV27 cam, SE heavy breather and a Dynatek ignition module. Heads are getting ported this winter. I have no idea what a stock Evo does.
I just rode up to the store a minute ago...damn that thing is quiet. Grrr.
I'm running the unwrapped straight through cheese grater baffles in my Longshots and it's still pretty loud. Loud enough for some of my biker buddys to tell me I need to put baffles in them, set off car alarms, make ladys swoon, etc. Those are pretty good numbers for an old EVO. And mine also runs a LOT better with the baffles.
Had the same thing happen to my bike on Friday nite on the dyno lower tank bracket bolts fell out & the shiffter about fell off 3 mi. down the road ! My 92 dynoed out at 70.8 Hp and 78.9 Lb ft. of torque he did'nt push it to hard as it uses a ton of oil and coud'nt see a thing after 5800 r's . Bike has a S&S Super E and a Thunderheader other than that wo'nt know anything else till I tear it down in few months .
