Default Electrical troubleshoot

Alright, 4 or 5 weeks ago I had an isse that happened after washing my bike (95 heritage). The neutral light wouldn't come on and there was a clicking noise coming from inside the console....a couple clicks every 5 seconds or so. I rode it into work that day and 8 hours later the bike was fine. I figured something had gotten wet ( then dried out) and I had no other issue with it until yesterday, after another washing ( I've washed it a few times in between with no problem). I rode her into work thinking it would dry out again like last time, but with the thought that I definately need to troubleshoot it. When I left work at 11 pm, not only were the symptoms still there, but more. Along with the neutral light unlit and the clicking noise, the speedo light was going off and on, and I had no headlight or tree lights except the turn signals. My ride home is through the dark countryside, so even with using the turn signals for light, it was a rather scary ride home. I was wondering with what I'm describing with the new symptoms, does it hint to the first place I should be checking....I suck at electrical issues. Thanks

Start with the basics: Battery and grounds. Then work your way up to the other things. 18 year old bike, is going to have loose wires, which translates into bad connections.

Clicking noise could be from a circuit breaker. Meaning a short somewhere, or a worn out breaker.

Diagnosing wiring issues are tough, and often time consuming. Do the simple stuff first, get yourself a continuity tester.

Gosh, here, take this magic pill that's only $500 and everything will be great. That's what everyone wants.

Or, you can try reading this thread and this post:

but it's a lot more work.

You might have a component that is now full of water, a circuit breaker or similar....even a relay but basically water has got where water doesn't need to be.

Track it down and waterproof it...

The clicking is probably a thermal cutout, protecting the wet part of your electrics! You may find you have a poor ground or loose connector somewhere, which the water has aggravated. Trace, clean and dry, protect and tighten!
