So my 86 has a cable clutch. Is there an easy way to covert to hydro clutch? Would it make the clutch pull easier? Maybe just a tranny cover swap? Also can i go to a newer stock dyna front master cylinder? Im running 4 piston PM caliper. Would i then need to run new throttle and housing too? Could i do this? Ive got a 2 cable throttle and a stock CV carb. Thanks
the trans door and the trans out side cover needs to be replaced for a master cylinder clutch - most have the 96 and up control master in the kits, so converting to 96 / 06 controls will be needed anyway soo its a win win if you do it - johnjzjz
A good clutch cable, lubed, will make all the world of difference. The one I have on now is a genuine HD cable I found at a dealer and it is very easy to pull.

I had a 1984 FXSB Shovelhead...the cable was okay but I rode it in a childrens fund raising parade once at walking pace for almost a mile, now that was hard on the hand and clutch. Like Hess said lube it and leave it, keep it simple.
If it is an old one, even the original cable, then chuck it! I have owned my 1990 bike from new and realised my cable was feeling stiff (may just be these older hands!) and that as I am now pensioned, the cable deserved being pensioned off too. I bought an HD Diamondback which is brilliant - hi-tech stuff for an old bike. Try one! Don't faff around trying to make an old cable youthful......
And make sure that spring plate thingie is at spec. If that is too tight, that will make it hard to pull as well, and (my theory) lead to the clutch finger thingie breaking.
All new cables. Guessing original clutch with 12k miles. First ride this past weekend and the bikes been off the road awhile. Ran good. I have all winter to mess around. Didnt know if i should keep my eyes open for some used hydro clutch parts. Will it be worth it?
I believe the 86 had the clutch cable lever on top of the trans and not on the right hand end of the trans like 87 and later. So to change to hydraulic you would have to change out alot of parts. Like everyone else is saying, get a new cable and keep it lubed.
