Default M&M

Well, just experienced another hiccup with my 98 UltraM&M injector system. Since 98 I’ve had numerous issues with it. Some major, some minor, some still lingering. Changed every switch/sensor at least once, been to the shop with no positive outcome, just a smaller wallet. To date, I’mstill wondering what the heat sensor is for. On them cold mornings my choke sys is me holding my throttle open untilthe motor can idle on its own. The first thought I have when I take off for aride is, should I take the trusty carburetor 94 Fatboy or take a chance and seeif this thing will return on its own power or on the back of a tow truck. Many ofrides the Fatboy would have been the wise choice. Invested too much in thisbike with a new motor, six speed, sound sys, and lots of extras. So getting ridof it is out of the question. One thing I’m sure is, I will not invest any more$s into the “Sequential Port Injection’ system. So I’m going to venture down the path with ripping the injector systemout and replacing it with a carburetor, preferably a Mikuni 42. As for cost, I don’t think it is a bankbuster. However, once installed it’s not going to nickel and dime me as theinjector does and I won’t have that thought of a tow truck on my mind when Itake off. On the bright side, I’ll havemore room to put other neat stuff on. As anyone knows who have an EVO ultrathere’s not a lot of room to put additional stuff on that requires additionalelectrical wire extensions, especially behind the ECM/Cruise control covers. Ifigure that the fuel management wire harness, injector unit, cruise control,ECM and fuel tank innards need to be removed. Don’t want to keep things on thebike I’m not going to need. Not sure what sensors need to remain such as thecrank position sensor. Don’t know if there is a replacement wire harness or doI have to make my own. Anyways, I would greatly appreciate any advice, suggestions, recommendations or experiences (pros/cons) anyone would like toshare.

Ride safe.

Welcome to the forum. My '00 M&M has been excellent even after 14 years but I guess its the luck of the draw. Replacing all the sensors chasing an issue can get expensive. An what about the cold idle screw just off the bell crank to hold the throttle open when cold? Is your step motor working? That's what the heat sensor is for. Half the problem nowadays is finding someone who knows how to adjust them IMO.

There are threads in here detailing how guys have converted to carb for about $700 or so. That's about the cost of an S&S ECM upgrade for the M&M injection btw.

Good Luck with what you decide.

It is covered fully in several posts here and around the net. Throw it away and don't look back.

We have at least one MMI expert, who will hopefully call by soon. In addition there are aftermarket replacements for the system from S&S and Harley, which upgrade the original system.

if you keep some of the electrics and use an S&S carb they also have / make the cable carb bracket for the cruse control < it is good to keep that if you can as i know it mikuni is a better carb but does not have the bracket for the cruse - BUT one could invent one

also have you replaced the fuel filter in the gas tank

Been there done that. Tried for a year to get the bugs worked out. Switched it over to a Mikuni and couldn't have been happier. The bike ran much better with the carb. Like the other guys have said, there are a lot of previous posts about this. So get you a manual, read some previous posts and start picking up some parts. Bought most of mine off Ebay, better prices. The switch over is really pretty easy but if you get stuck these guys on here were really helpful to me when I was doing it. Once I had all the parts I almost finished it in a day but I'm pretty meticulous and ****.

Couple ways to go about the change over.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-c...injection.html

The heat sensor or engine temperature sensor tells the ECM how long for injector pulse width for fuel control, it also controls the stepper motor that is causing your problem. If you have a cold high idle and falls off on its own, the system is possibly ok and the stepper motor just needs adjusted, if you turn the key on and the stepper motor moves and resets itself it should be ok and need to turn the screw to adjust it, it will need to be adjusted cold and will only have a few minutes to adjust it once the engine starts seeing heat. If you adjust if after cold mode it will kick on to a higher than normal idle next time at cold start up. If the outside temperature temperature is cold, the high idle can stay on for awhile so you need to figure out if it is a normal condition, it reads off engine heat on the front cylinder by engine temperature sensor.

If the system works, it works and not a bad system but nobody likes to mess with it when it fails. Yes a carb install was a positive change when I did it but ran out of fuel delivery for a stronger engine, not M&M issues but you get the Evo idle back and a system that most wrenches can repair and not needing a tech for a system that nobody wants to touch.
