I'd like to replace the front wheel on mine but not sure about the shimming and don't have a trust worthy indy around.... Don't you need some sort of end play or runout guage to do it?

If the wheel you fit was shimmed correctly on the donor bike then it will be correct on your bike.
I had a complete mare because the wheel had been modified and was running an extended spacer tube, no stepped washer and no shims. It had been set too tight and the outer races had gone oval.
Messed with my head for a bit that did until I looked up the part number and then googled it and ended up on the Custom Chrome site, they sell an aftermarket spacer and conveniently listed the correct length (4.308")...so off to the lathe we go, get hold of a shim kit and washer, some new wheel bearings (free of charge from the Indy who supplied the wheel) and it was easy after that.
The real find in the this project was the American Enginuity top handle bar clamp. Usually 240 USD, my Indy gave it to me for free because they didn't know where they had got it from or what it was worth and I am a good customer...plus they were on a guilt trip over the bearings in the wheel.
You need these to relocate the idiot lights from the visor. Joker machine do a cheaper one that only works with the idiot lights that sit in the speedo mount but you can make it work.
