Default Air Cleaner for '91 Evo

My Softail still has the stock air cleaner and backing plate. I'm wanting to upograde the air cleaner, but still keep the stock cover. Looking at S&S or Arlen Ness I'm not seeing an Evo upgrade option for a '91, only '93 to '99. Does anyone know if the '93 to '99 units will fit a '91 FLSTC?

Also opinions on Arlen Ness vs S&S.

Thanks,
Tony

a 1991 motor is a bottom breather - in 92 they went to top ( AT THE HEADS ) breather now you can use the later on the early bike , but we have made spacers for the larger holes in the attachment to the heads as needed -- jz

How about a fresh high flow filter and a new cover for yours? As said above you would just need to change the bolts on the Ness Big sucker. It comes with 2 bigger breather bolts for the newer heads that you'd swap to the bolt size that matches the threads in your heads. You probably would need some washers to seal the bolts up.

Thanks for the replies. I'd like to keep the stock cover if possible, upgrade the filter and change out the backing plate to be able to use a thumb screw for easier carb adjustment.

Your original back-plate was a plastic moulding which enclosed the filter element, is that what you still have? I'm pretty sure a #29543-99B can be made to fit with a little effort. The top breathing engines simply adapted the original filter mounting bolts and turned them into hollow screws. The holes in the mounting bracket may be too big, but that shouldn't present too much of a challenge to an Evo owner!

abrieviating the plastic backing plate with a hacksaw and perforating it with large holes usually allows it to pass more air

however personally I'd fit an S&S style aircleaner, they flow nicely and are just a better engineered bit of kit than the factory aircleaner

I have the Screaming Eagle backing plate with the K&N filter. Mine is a bottom breather so I just used bolts and spacers to mount it. They are all over ebay. Somerthing like this:

Thanks for all the feedback ...I wound up picking up a Ness Big Sucker II and then a Crankcase Breather Filter. Any suggestions on spacers so the bracket fits correctly? Also since this is a bottom breather, would you replace the hollow bolts with standard bolts?

Thanks,
Tony

What size thread are the bolts in the heads? I believe they are smaller in the nonhead breather heads. So yes you'd have to get different mount bolts. My 92 has top breather heads, but it is still a bottom breather motor. But I still have been running the head breathers to the bottom of the carb. I'm about to pull the trigger on the Big Sucker kit myself. Nice scooter.
