Left case bearing retaining ring?
I posted this in the engine section also.
Engine is a 97 Evo out of an electra glide.
The left case bearing retaining ring is loose.
Does anyone know of a fix for the left case where the bearing retaining ring goes?
I purchased the bike with the engine in pieces and I am just starting to work on it. upon removal of both outer races I discovered the retaining ring was loose.
the previous owner stated that it had been rebuilt due to a crank bearing problem and then within a thousand miles or so he trouble again - this time the crankpin nut came loose and it started rubbing inside the cases. it washed out the tapers in the crank and scraped the cases some, but he shut it down and got it trailered. It all looked superficial, so I got a used crank and other stuff to repair it, now I find this.......
Thanks in advance for any info on a suggested course of action.

you need to buy the correct tool that spreads the ring internally to remove and install, Using the new ring you got with the new bearing you can than heat it and walk it open about 1/4 inch more than it is - than we cut grooves in the ring on the out side edge kind of like a chain saw blade chain when you file it , ( A HOOK LIP ) this way it digs into the block groove and wont spin - NOTE if it spins it blocks the oil intake port for the bearing at 12 oclock < reason he lost the bearing in the first place, clean the groove and the ring with thinner and use the Red lock tight PASTE not the liquid, and install the ring with the tool DO NOT BEAT IT IN - clean the area good just with paper towel and install the 2 races NO lock tight - you will need to install the crank right away, with the correct bearing tool, while its still in place the bearing tool, give the top of the post on the tool a smart shot with a lead hammer to seat the bearings up tight, check the tool tightness again you might be able to move it tighter again, having said that its a smart shot not a demolition wall - now let it sit over night 24 hours is better with all the pieces in place tool and all -
@ 24 hours later / than remove the crank again take the shim split spacer that came with the new bearing using a mike measure its thickness and go and get a larger one by .005 thousands do a .006 before doing a .004 with the shims - when you re install the crank into the block using the new shim and the tool is still installed and tight give the edge of the block a wiggle if you can feel a movement in the 2 bearings your good if not you need a bigger shim
note the movement is just like a feeling somthing is a little loose it wont be much once you feel it you will know what i an taking about at that point your good to reassemble the motor
if you should deside to replace the block i could be a buyer for the old one -- johnjzjz

I guess I should have given a clearer description of the problem. Upon removal of the retaining ring with the special tool it is evident that the ring groove in the case is damaged.
I don't know if this is from the crank shifting from the crankpin nut coming loose or from the prior service when the other bearing problem occurred.
Is there a fix for the case groove?
