So, I pulled my plugs tonight just have a look (been getting a slight momentary ping when throttling off idle/sub 2k rpms and fully hot).
I nearly sh*t my pants when I saw what looked like rust on the plugs! Turns out (after a little web research), the chemical compound MMT in the octane booster I was using can leave a rusty looking residue on the plugs/valves/pistons.
Needless to say, I won't be using a booster any more, and I'm gonna work on tuning that little bit of ping out instead.
Just thought I would share my "oh sh*t" experience!
So why are you experiencing that ping? Some mods are driving your engine out of harmony?
The motor was recently rebuilt using 10:1 pistons, so my cranking compression is close to 190, right on the edge of detonation with the current crap gas we have to choose from, and to be honest, I got it running pretty good and haven't tried to tweak the carb or timing any further. Other than that slight (occasional) ping she runs like a raped ape! I was just being lazy and dumping octane boost in it as a bandaid.
You may want to retard your timing a bit (not sure what kind of setup you have there). Another option would be leaner mixture for low RPM (need EFI for that). Yet another option is dropping in more aggressive cams which will reduce your dynamic compression ratio.

Uhh, sub 2k is your problem, stay above that or accelerate slowly till above 2k
I do, and that works 99% of the time. The other day I was on a decent little trip w/ the OL (80* temps). After a long 70mph run we came to a stop. On take-off she clattered a decent amount, and I had to rev it and feather the clutch to silence it. Not cool. I'm sure it can be tuned out with minimal effort.

Ya just HAD to stick the (80* temps) in there , didn't ya?
