Is the derby cover the factory unit? Whether or not, before you try to reseal it, find a piece of glass or other perfectly flat surface to check the cover. It will never seal if it is warped.

Thanks for the feedback! No, it's not. Just about everything on this bike has been changed out. If it is warped, is it possible to straighten it, or am I stuck with buying a new derby cover? I take that back...it may be factory but it's not the stock cover.

I've never seen anyone successfully straighten one out, but maybe it can be done.

My bike calls for 3 quarts at an oil change. I always only use 2.5 quarts just for this reason!

And don`t check your oil when the engine is cold. I always check mine just a couple of minutes after I shut it down when I pull into the garage.

The small sheet of glass is a great idea, for checking if it is flat. If it is not too warped it can be straightened, or corrected, but that is a skill I learned early in life and haven't done it for many years! I had an old thick plate glass mirror that was perfect.
