Default dash lights keep blowing 1986 flhtc

Ok, found almost all of my little bulbs blew out. Removed the fairing, Speedo, checked wires all looked fine. Rode one day and they started popping again. As much of a joy it is to pull the fairing, I would like to find out why this is occurring, wiring looks ok so does the connecor, need writing help to figure out what color wire delivers power to the lights, may put it on its own circuit....

Thank you

Sounds like the voltage regulator is overcharging the system. I would check it out...

It's usually something simple!

Either too much voltage, or a short to ground? Dr Hess has the definitive guide to checking your charging system in the Evo stickies.

Sounds like the regulator to me. Check the voltage with the motor revved to 4K or 5K. Yeah, read the sticky.

Not a short to ground.

A short to ground would be somewhere between the bulb and the fuse, and it would blow the fuse, not the bulb.

yep, check your voltage to make sure your regulator isn't overcharging. if that's good i would start looking at grounds. a bad ground will cause bulbs to pop really quick.

How much of a PITA is iyt to replace the regulator, can I cut/splice without tearing apart the inner primary? I have an actual volt gauge on my bike that I have checked against my FLUKE and it is accurate. If I am idling I she can go up to 15V sometimes, I turn on my headlight and she is fine. I don't know what happens at the time of the bulb failure, but she stays at 13 v or a little higher when my headlight is on.

Your system regulator might not be limiting your voltage.
Or the regulator is some how loose at a connector.
Riding without repair could damage electrical components.
You have an over voltage condition.
With out further available information it would seem that the voltage regulator could be a possibility.
Are you familiar with Ronnie's Harley Davidson?
They have a parts finder fiche thing that allows you to "see" the part.
Click motorcycle, then click model information.
you are looking at alternator and voltage regulator section.
Then look at voltage regulator.
Should have no cutting, no splicing and only about two bolts to access/remove it.
No primary removal.
BUT as described by others, NEVER buy parts before confirming that the electrical system has been checked...step by step...buying a part without checking might not resolve the problem or only be part of a problem...for example you buy the part and new part fails because you failed to noticed the chaffed wire that was grounding the connector or you failed to notice that the connector was loose to begin with so the problem repeats.
Have you checked the AC..yes AC voltage not DC voltage at the stator plug ?

I had a similar problem on my 87 Flhtp. Make sure you are replacing the bulbs with similar or higher wattage ratings, the first set i used were underrated and I had to reoplace them all almost immediatle, my local automotive store carried them they were a bit longer but have never blown and that was almost 2 years ago. Hope that is all it is, good luck!
