Default stereo problem

I just started having a problem with my stereo. The volume is all over the place. Up-down-up down. 65 mph with the cruise control set and the volume goes from barely audible to blasting within a second. It also does it just sitting in the garage with the accessory switch on. It does it with the MP3 player, the XM satellite, and the regular FM stations, so it must be in the stereo itself. It's the original stereo that came on the bike. I thought it might be the volume switch on the left handlebar. Harley dealer says that switch is obsolete and they can't order it. I did have the outer fairing off a couple of weeks ago. This problem started about a week after that. Anyone ever have this problem with one of these old stereos??

I have that problem with my aftermarket unit with a biketronic handlebar control conversion. I finally disabled the AVC function - not sure if your's has that option. Another thing I found was the volume control **** had a rubber boot around the stem had broken down and was not allowing the stem to move freely so some of the functions worked sporatically. might be worth checking out. There's a small set screw under the **** that might be covered with grime - remove it and you'll see the boot.

Thanks Rizzo. After removing the fairing today and checking all the connections and not being able to find the problem, I decided to order the Biketronics plug and play system for a 95 Harley. I hope the installation is as easy as they claim. Any tips on installing it would be appreciated. I figured this factory radio is 19 years old, probably been rained on a few times. Time for an upgrade. I only ordered the radio and wiring harness, no speakers. I'm wondering if just any good quality car stereo speakers of the same size would work? The factory speakers still work ok but, you know the old saying, "while I'm in there".

1) Car speakers tend to be paper and foam. Higher end car speakers may be OK for a bike, but cycle speakers are built for the job.

2) Any aftermarket bike speakers will outperform the HD ones.

So, while you are in there.........

Get whatever sounds good. Even the cheapest speakers at Walmart are injection molded polypropylene. They'd probably play under water.
