When mine finally goes, I'll go with the 32 amp 29985-87, which I think you have already. Are you running a boom bike or something? 1KW sub woofer?

I stuck with the standard 32 amp system on my '90 Ultra for several reasons, adequate charging, less parasitic drag, not as expensive, and mostly, when I'm on road trips, if I would have a regulator problem, almost any dealer or indy should have one in stock.

Before you go throwing money around for parts . I would look for the reason why your original stator burned up ?
Check the seal at the location were the stator wires exit the primary case and look for a short to ground there. This is usually the cause of a stator burn out.

That wouldn't really matter, machinehed, as that's getting replaced with the new stator anyway. But I agree, look for a reason. In my experience, if it's a common thing, it is usually a short somewhere that you'll never find unless you're looking for something else.

When I replaced the voltage regulator on my 1996 Ultra Classic, I was told by the HD shop that it was a 38 amp system.

Did you get the regulator and rotor to go with it?
