Hey all, thanks for reading this. I am having trouble with a 1998 flhtcui. It will start right up even when very cold, but if I don't let it warm up for 5 or 10 minutes and operate the throttle, it will not idle and will immediately stahls out. It will only restart if you let it sit and cool for a while, or if you twist the throttle and push the starter button. If I re-start it by giving it gas, it will only keep running if you keep giving it gas until it warms up, then will idle on the warm idle. When I bought the bike (used) the warm idle was set way to low, around 400rpm. I have since adjusted it to 1000rpm and thought that might solve me problem, and it seemed to at first, but now it's back to its old tricks. I know nothing about efi, and am happy with the performance of the bike, I just want to know if anyone has experienced the same problem. as far as I can tell the evo has the cam it was born with, a screamin' eagle air box with k&n, and cycle shack drag pipes with baffles installed.
On a separate issue the head breather seems to be spewing oil into the airbox. enough to drip onto the cam cover and spray all the way back to the front of the saddle bag.
in your sig you have 2 of them - if i had 2 i would start switching parts till it worked like the other assuming the other one runs correct
paying some one 100 bucks an hour to flonder around for a couple of days with it makes no sense - no one has parts in stock for them and if they do something was going on is why they have them
Mine did similar things. It was hard to start when hot - bike overflooded, smell of gas around and it started only afler long cranking. The head temperature sensor was failed. But I didn't start to replace it just threw out sensor together with the injector, ecm and a lot of harness and swap to carb. Now I'm happy with Mikuni HSR carb and stock dual fire ignition. The best mod I ever did to bike. Correct jetting and consumption is 5l/100km or 47mpg riding two up on the highway
First thing to do is change out the intake seals. Bet there junk. That was the best thing I did for mine. Same bike But the temp sender would be next
Like others have said the BEST BEST I did for that bike.......change it too carb. It's runs so different I should have never wasted time with that early EFI.
Going to **** off the tree huggers but run that breather hose to the ground and plug the air filter backing plate, this "on the rag" problem has existed for a while, alot if elaborate attempts at repairs or a simple one to the ground

Problem solved! I cleaned the mm unit with throttle body cleaner, re adjusted the slow idle and disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour. Hooked the battery up and runs great! the slow idle is now at 900 and no oil coming out of the air cleaner.
