Default EVO Masters Please Help.

95 road king
Everything works fine until the heat in AZ hits real hard. All these things happen before motor starts running funny.

3-4 miles stop and go conditions, then when I do get to the freeway as soon as Im at around 65-70mph motor starts cutting out. Loss of RPM's and speedo loss and lights all electrical comes in and out with motor. If i down shift it comes back up untill i get back in fith gear again, most time the malfunction drops my speed to around 50. Seems to me that it gets real hot during the stop and go them when getting on the freeway it just cant take anymore. I could be wrong but it seems as it gets more air to cool it off it stabilizes and everything is good again and I can keep going at any speed, once its finished throwing a fit. Keep in mind 8 months of the yr this does not happen.

THINGS IVE DONE TO TRY AND CORRECT

New ignition
New plug wires
New coil
Machined slots in ignition cover to allow more air flow.
Cant find bad ground
Checked gas cap for vapor lock (it breathes fine)
CV carb

I am a BACA member and ride at least 1500 miles a month, I need to finally resolve this problem. Thank you in advance.

Have you tried new plugs?

FWIW I had some problems with my stock carb.
I had it rebuilt and it helped some but the problem persisted.
It was cutting out for the first few miles I rode the bike.

I put a S&S E and haven't had a problem since.

All electrical comes in and out with the motor: You have a short or a bad main breaker.

I'd have to think the same way.. I'd also look at the ignition switch.. If I remember right, the '95s had problems and maybe even a service action or recall on them..

What Hess said. I had a similar issue with an '01. Main breaker under the seat gets weak and starts to cycle off when it heats up. Leaves you dead in the water until it cools enough to reset. The breaker is nothing special. I think it is a 30 amp, but check yours. You can pick up a replacement at any auto parts store. It's about a $5 part
Start with that before you dig any further.

yea the braker is always suspect with a hot intermittent failure

you might want to add an extra ground from the bikes frame to the engine as it can cause a heat build up like you have if the ground is weak

I was having ground issues, I thought all were tight, but I pulled on the big black ground to battery and it came out of the metal connector. It had gone bad over time and couldn't even see it.

OK took it out today looks crappy and burnt also notice bare wire showing in starter line. The old one was a 50amp, that seemed a bit high and book shows 30 so I split the difference and went with a 40amp, from Auto Zone cost was 3.50. I have a ride tomorrow afternoon it should be a brisk 110 out. So either way Ill know if its fixed tomorrow and will report back. Thanks for the help!

What book are you looking at that shows a 30 amp main breaker?

You split the difference between the incorrect breaker and the one the manual says to use.......

Never use a larger breaker than what is specified by the manufacturer.

Breakers and fuses are there to protect the wiring.

If the service manual shows a 30 amp breaker, then you use a 30 amp breaker.
