Default metal shavings

So I cahanged the oil in the bike yesterday. Got away from the Royal Purple and switched to the Mobile 1. But when I dropped the drain plug there was a lot of metal shavings stuck to it. I know that before I got the bike the cam bearing was replaced when the nex cam was put in. I has a lifter collapse on me last season. Only replaced the front two. But there has not been any abnormal noises in the engine and I've pit a good 10k plus on it since then. Should I be concerned with these shavings? I did pull the tappet screen to and that was clean with no metal in it. I'm hoping its nothing major considering that the season here in NE WI is still in full effect!!

Cut your oil filter open and see what's inside.

I cut the filter open and inspected. Found no metal.

So, you're saying you found metal in the oil tank and no metal in the filter? We had a case of that here recently. Best conclusion anyone could come up with was sabotage. On an evo, the oil from the motor passes through the filter before getting to the oil tank. If the filter is clean and metal shavings are in the tank, the only way to get there is if someone put them there or the filter failed.

Sure it wasn't just a fine paste? If so that's normal.

It's also possible that it was left over from previous problems. A major failure that had stuff get past the oil filter and in to the tank, hangs around, eventually gets stuck on the magnet?

Anyway, change it, flush the tank out, keep a close eye on it and cut the oil filters open for the next few oil changes. That's what I would do.

Sounds familiar...

Dredge your oil tank w/ one of those extendable magnets, or flush it w/ some kerosene and dredge the drain pan when done, or both. Be sure to flush the kero out with a cheap quart of oil when done.

If you want to really be thorough, you could just drop the pan and inspect/clean.
