Default Exhausted

Gentleman, and I use that term loosely, ha!

After the cam bearing repair, the nut that holds front exhaust pipe flange in place, keeps coming loose. I can tell when it starts to loosen because I get a rattle when coming of the throttle. It is the right one, as look you look at it from the the front of the bike. The left one remains tight??

I went through all the heat shields and al the rest of the exhaust system to be sure everything was tight.

Is there something I didn't do right or is there a tip on keeping that nut/stud tight?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I've never had that problem, but when I re-install the pipes, I DO have to retighten the exhaust flange nuts once or twice until the new gaskets settle in.

I'll start the bike, run it for a short ride then let the motor cool down and re-torque the flange nuts to 80 inch pounds. After another week or two, I'll check them again. They usually stay after that.

Is the stud coming loose or the nut? If the stud is coming loose I recommend carefully removing it and Loctite it in the head. I've saw heads damaged due to the stub pulling aluminum threads out of the head.

The rear pipe on mine would loosen from time to time. I finally put a drop of red locktite on things. Mind ya now just A drop on clean threads. It's holding so far BG WP

Thank you for the insight.

It is the nut and I still need to tighten it up. Been riding a lot since the weather has been great.

I did not replace the gaskets. Sounds like that might be part of the problem. ??

I do remember when I bought the bike I had that same noise and was told to check on the flange nuts. I did and it took a couple times and the issue went away. Same nut??

I had the same issue on my bike. On a long trip I had my lower rear one fall completly off. After I replaced it with a new one I had to retighten it twice. Its been holding now for about 5000 miles.I carrying a stubby 1\2" offset wrench everywhere I go

I don't see why you can't stick a lock washer under there if you wanted to.

I think they are supposed to be self locking.
