I just bought a 1982 ironhead sportster 1000. It runs aight when at first but when it warms up it runs real rough and cuts out. I checked the plugs and they are black and wet with gas (fouled). Also if i really get on it and then let off it will start running rough and wants to quit. it is really hard to start when hot as well and usually will not stay running. need to let it cool down then restart. help a newie out guys i know you got some ideas
With the symptoms you describe, I would start with a compression test both hot and cold. It has the symptoms of the need for a valve job, or if you have adjustable pushrods in it, they are in need of adjustment.
If nothing is shown there , check out the intake for leaks.
After that, I'd suspect a carb that is dumping gas into the engine when hot.
Then maybe it could be point gap closing up too if you have points in it yet.
If it were a valve issue would the bike still run fine when cold. What would make the carb dump gas in when hot? I have an electronic ignition and have plenty of spark. My initial thought was it is jetted way to rich for my area.
What carb? If it has the float level set too high, or of the float valve isn't seating properly, the bike will basically want to flood out, or appear to run too rich. Pull the carb and go through it, checking jet size, float height, and if it is the original Keihin butterfly carb, go to your local HD shop and get the newer 4 sided float valve. Check the float seat, too. If it's buggered, the carb is toast. Adjust your pushrods. You have solid lifters in this bike, and when they start getting out of whack the bike will be very hard to start. Also if your electronic ignition still uses the mechanical advance assembly, make sure it's up to snuff. If it sticks, again the bike will be hard to start. After making sure the carb is good to go, adjusting the pushrods, and checking the advance mechanism, make sure the timing is OK.

Yes it could . As things heat up and clearances change, the valves may not be seating completely. Check your pushrod adjustment and do a compression test.
