Damage Risk(s) - No Muffler Cans - 2017 V-ROD NRS
I'm getting mixed messages from web & HD techs.
New V-ROD NRS--what effect will removing stock muffler cans have whilst awaiting upgrade?
- Riding style is moderate-to-aggressive
- everyday rider (10-15mi); with a planned 200mi trip coming up this weekend.
- All stock (no air filter/intake changes/tunes/etc)
I've read/heard anything from
- low miles; little-to-no-negative-effect provided air intake isn't increased
- could likely alter fuel:air ratio and/or O2s...after a "long while" without cans
- Bike blows up, killing a small village in rural Idaho.
First HD; crossed over from rice burner, yes, "sound" is the why:

- what are the technical outcomes/risks of this weekend's 200mi ride without cans?
- Or don't sweat it but make it a priority to get proper backpressure/exhaust/A/C & ECM flashed before 500mi on bike?

No cans will decreased back pressure causing backfiring... among a plethora of other issues.
Welcome to the HD/cruiser world. I've ridden all kinds of bikes: old UJM's from the 60's-80's, japanese V-twins, sport bikes (R6, FZ-6, 600RR), and my HDs. I think you'll enjoy the HD experience.
Almost everyone I knew that got a VRod as their HD gateway drug changed out within a few years to a bike with more traditional stance (rake/trail angle) as it was more comfortable and easier to steer. Don't get me wrong, the VRod's look fun, but you might just get hooked on a Dyna or a softail. My drug is currently an Electra Glide (Evo) and a Road Glide.
