Default Gas Flow

Replaced the OEM petcock on my 98 dresser with a good (?) aftermarket one, to get away from the vacuum system. Had some problems with it and the company replaced it with their new current model because it had a lifetime warranty. The problem with the first one,was it would take too long to catch reserve and sometimes stall. On a four day trip this past weekend the new one ( had it on about a year ) started to sputter at half tank and I would switch to reserve and keep going along fine. After this happened for three fill ups or so, I started to stall out. I would immediatly hit the starter and the bike would fire right back up and I would continue on, sometimes for long distances ( 30 or more miles ). After 5-6 times of this, itkept running but would hiccup, sometimes close together ( once a mile ) or the one time I went 116 miles without a problem. There was no problems going under 60 MPH. My brother with his fuel injected bike didn't have any problems,so I don't suspectthe fuel. I think it has to do with the petcock and I am going to replace it. Any thoughts?

I'd pull the fuel line and check flow from the petcock at a few different fuel levels. If it seems slow (which may be tough to tell) pull the petcock and check for debris. If clean, probably think about replacing it. What brand is it? I bought a pingel fuel valve and that thing flows! I don't recommend the style I bought though. It works great, but it's tough to tell where reserve is while haulin' down the highway. If I did it again, I'd get one that has a lever to make it very easy to tell which position the valve is in.

It was a EMS petcock. I ordered a Pingel with a nice looking lever on it. It actually looks a lot like the EMS one. When I drained the tank it was flowing good, but I don't no if that relates to anything. I figure it's cheap enough to start with a new petcock from a company that's been around forever and if thats not it, I'll start looking into the carb.

Might as well replace the fuel lines while you're at it.
