Default Silencers - any difference between models ?

Hi guys,

my 1996 Dyna has silencers off an 03 Dyna.

my question, are the silencers from the 03 any different to the ones from say 1995 ?
Other than catalytic convertor stuff inside the muffler, are they the same ? Would they sound any different, or made different ?

hope that makes sense.

Peter

Neither muffler came with cats in '95 or '03.

Ok…..I’ll have to check, they may be 06 but the question is the same.
Are they basically the same muffler ?

One's an EVO and the other is a Twin Cam.
Larger motor, more displacement with the Twin Cam.
So even with the same exhaust it'll sound different.
And who knows what baffles are in there?
You could go to any aftermarket supplier's website and cross reference what fits what for compatibility.
Like will exhaust's for 1989's fit to 2011.
Sometimes it's just the mounting support.

I have a 98 EVO and two sets of stock HD mufflers that I have interchanged on occasion.. One set is the stock one for the EVO and the other is off a Twin Cam, early 2000's. No cats in either. They look identical and if you check the HD part numbers you can find them in the HD parts fiche for their respective years.. They do have a part number for each side. So they are meant to go on in pairs.

The only physical difference between the two that I've found is that the end of the baffle on the EVO has a slightly larger exit hole, say about 1/2". This hole is just off center. The Twin Cam has a smaller hole in the same location, say 1/4". The front of the baffle for both mufflers has the same size holes. Neither of these mufflers have been drilled etc. The EVO muffler is louder than the Twin Cam. I attribute that to the larger exit hole but some may also be because of the age of the mufflers.

As to performance differences between the two, without a Dyno or something similar noise isn't a good indicator of any power difference of the two. I do prefer the sound of the stock EVO mufflers and they are still quiet when compared to anything aftermarket. Hope that helps.
