I had a shop tell me that the conversion from 883 to 1200 is just boring 1/4 inch out of the cylinders and different pistons. I am concerned about taking that much metal out of the sleeve would cause it to over heat. Has enyone had a problem with this?
Boring out your stock cylinders is just fine. In fact all HD 1200 cylinders are, are just bored out 883 jugs and nothing more.
Just make sure that the shop that bores your jugs use TORQUE PLATES! If they don't AVOID THEM!!!. Torque plates are needed to mimic the compressed force that your jugs endure when bolted to your heads and ensure that the cylinder hole is ROUND when bored out under pressure. A round cylinder means a better piston ring to cylinder wall seal, and that means more horsepower for you!
One thing about going from a 883 to a 1200 is you are not going to get same power as a 1200 with 883 heads. Best bang for your buck is a using Buel heads and pistons, and the bolt in cams. Just did this swap and we made 98 hp all SE bolt on parts. Most shops that do the swap use a dished piston to keep the compression down with the 883 heads it runs ok but it is not goiung to run like a stock 1200.
You did not list the year of your bike so I cannot post the Se part numbers but you can just as well thumb through the Se catalog yourself and find the parts. The SE parts work very well for bolt on items. Good luck with your project.
