Having problem with my 1340 shovel. It`s hard to start, the plugs get wet and black, I think it get`s too much fuel.with the airfilter mountedit`s almost impossible to start. Without it it starts but not easily.Took the carburator apartbut couldn`t find any faults. The fueljets are : Highspeed: .076" and the low speed: .0295".Is this really right? I think the main jet is too big, should be maybe .068"? Any advice for me out there? The carburator is a S/S super E.
Depends entirely on what's in the motor. There are some monster Shovelhead motors out there.
It does sound like you are too fat. When do the plugs get black? After running it or just after starting?
Did it used to run OK and this just started or are you starting (so to speak) from scratch? If it used to be OK and now it is too fat, then you have a problem somewhere. Most likely something is clogged. An intake air leak can do weird things too, as more gas is applied to compensate for it.
If you've just put the carb on or changed something else, then you have some tuning to do. Get some smaller jets and follow the instructions in the S&S manual, available online as a PDF.
Hi there.
Thanks for your help. have just ordered some new smaller jets and downloaded the S&S manual. Now it`s up to me to try to do some fine tuning. My problem is my temper!!! I get restless, I like big welding jobs, heavy lifting, taking care of my woman etc. I hate fine tuning jobs but I will try. The riding season in Sweden is over so it`s no problem leaving the bike standing. Have a good time.
Regards Mackan.
Don't forget your plugs once they foul they are on their way out.A new set of plugs and a good run down the highway then a reading of the plugs will give you a more accurate idea of what you need for jetting.
S&S carburetors do not like the choke either. If the choke is left too long....it can foul the plugs easily. In my opionion, a properly tuned S&S Super E carburetor should only need a few twists of the throttle before starting. I never use the choke.
The factory CV carburetor is a different story......they usually are extremely cold blooded. You can usually leave the choke on for a long time and never foul the plugs.
Anyways, how does the bike run after it is fully warmed up?
