Looking for some input re. the BEST carb for this application. My idea of best is a carb that is easy to keep tuned, I am not really concerned with the highest possible performance.
I see carbs available from S&S that look Ok until I read "not for use with Magneto euipped bikes".
Theres a Super B on ebay that looks OK but it's used and I don't know much about that carb.
This is my first Iron head Sportster and of courseI had tohave the XLCH.
The carb that is on it isn't going to cut it soI need a replacement. Anything that might make it a little easier to start and isn't a pain in the *** to keeptuned would be perfect.
For easy starting, make sure it has an accelerator pump. The S&S shorty (Super E? I forget. Whichever one is the smaller bore) should be OK, but it is too much for an 883 in my experience.I don't think that Super B had an accelerator pump. Back in the day, they were hard to start and only wanted to run right wide open. Ran great wide open, though.
I have the original Tillitson on my 67xlch and it works fine. Matter of fact, the longest time I've ever had the same carb on anything. There are some things that you need to check. They are easy to rebuild, but you might need a manuel. The only re-occuring problem I have had is the diaphram in the accelerator pump dries up if the bike isn't ridden regularly. By the way, I think they are made by some American tractor company. You might get some more feedback if you post this in the Ironhead forum.
