Default 2002 FLSTF Carburated

I have roughly 14K+ on my bike, I've only put 2K on it myself. Pipes that came off it were aftermarket, not sure what brand, but they were blue as hell running off the rear. Put a brand new set of Screamin Eagle II Baloney cuts on, great deal for $150. And yes, brand new, maybe 40miles on them. Anyway, even with the old pipes my carb seems to backfire now and again. Hole bike jerks like it loses power completely and I hear a pop. Only on accelleration when it's cold outside, and very very rare on a warm day. It could happen after I've ridden 45min or so, or even after only 5-10mins. Not sure if it was jetted when the old ones were on, but took it down to a local dealer and he said by listening to it that it didn't sound like it needed to be jetted.

The 2nd part of my post is related to baloney cut exhausts. Only on CEMENT freeways with the grooves in them do I hear a very high pitched sound coming from the exhaust. Is this just the way it is, or something else? It almost sounds like an old VW Bug's pea shooter exhaust, but a little higher in pitch. Both exhausts I've had on the bike do the samething. When I hit asphalt or smooth concrete, it goes away. Any thoughts on both?

Thanks.

I can't believe nobody here has any idea regarding the misfire/backfire of the carb....

Get more fuel to it. Try cranking out the idle jet 1 full turn,and/ or shim up the needle, and/or increase the secondary jet size.

Order the 1988 sportster needle. HD part# 27094-88. The cough is because at the crossover of the slow speed jet and the needle there is a lean condition because at this point the needle is not tapered and the fuel that is coming out of the needle jet is not enough. The sportster needle is .002" smaller in diameter allowing enough fuel to keep you from coughing while your waiting for the vacuum slide to rise and engage the tapered part of the needle. Try setting the air/fuel mixture screw at 2.5 turns out. Use a 45 slow speed jet. The sportster needle and leave the main jet alone as it's too rich already which doesn't hurt you since it only matters after 3/4 throttle opening anyway. This should give you over 45 mpg and run well.

Why a Sportster needle? Will it work with the Fatboy's carb for a Twin 88? This is all new to me, so I have to ask the q's, sorry.

I'll try option 1 first. Thanks.
