What you're thinking about doing will probably help your AC a bit but there's more involved in making a great suckah. The element material, depth of the filter, and the shape of the carb or efi inlet play major roles in how the performance turns out. Check out the Doherty PACCair cleaner. It got huge raves from most of the major mags and what it appears to me the real key piece of their set up is the integral 1 1/2" velocity stack inside the filter. You being a machinist could make a similar set up for your stocker but you'd still be stuck with the low flow element and other restrictions. The mags that dyno tested the Doherty unit showed up to 11 hp gain at the rear wheel over stock. That's huge for the $290 investment. The Feb. 08 issue of American Iron Magazine had a Donny Peterson article on the finer points of air cleaner technology including the Doherty unit. Whether you buy one or make one there's a wealth of info in that article.
