Do a standard compresson test first. Then repeat it after squirting some oil in the cylinder. If the compression comes up its probably got a broken compression ring. If not its more likely to be something in the head. Be it a bad valve, blown gasket or something worse like a blown piston. But blowing blue or oil smoke sounds a little like a bad set of rings. In any case once you have done the test, pull off the heads. Its probably not unrepairable. Even if you dislike Wings, you have to admit that Honda's bike engines are really well made.
Sounds to me like a head gasket. Tell your buddy to find the WOTI list (Wings On The Internet), subscribe - and then listen to the input of those folks. They'll be able ta help him from diagnosis to final repair and reassembly.
Don't think head gasket has anything to do with what you describe. There's only one way to find it. Start at the tappet cover and look at the valve train. If that's good the head has to come off. At this point you can see the valves, piston and cylinder. Gut feeling is broken rings with a scored cylinder, but unless you tear it down you won't know for sure. Anything is repairable. All it takes is money. Ron
