Smog tests
baldjohnny,
I live in Ada County(Boise) where they do require emissions testing. I know as of right now they don't require motorcycles to be tested. I will do some research but I doubt a Republican state like Idaho would start testing motorcycles. I am all for the emissions in Canyon County and Gem. I hate getting behind them at a stop light and sucking in thier oil burning exhaust. I have some time to kill so I will look more into the new laws they are trying to pass and hopefully get back to you as you have my curiosity going.
Idaho Emissions Testing
Unfortunately, Northern Ada County is the only county in Idaho that requires the registered vehicles of its residents to go through an annual emissions test, regulated by the Ada County Air Quality Board. A number of locations within the county make it easy on you.
For more questions concerning this matter, contact the office of the Ada County Air Quality Board at (208) 377-9191 or check out its Web site at www.emissiontest.org.
Exempt Vehicles
While most vehicles in Northern Ada County are required to pass an emissions test, the law does not require that all vehicles be tested. For example, you do not have to have an emissions test, even in Ada County, if your vehicle:
[*]Is a model year 1964 or earlier [/ul]
[*]Is powered by propane, electricity, or another fuel that is not gasoline or diesel fuel[/ul]
[*]Is less than one year old and still owned by the first owner[/ul]
[*]Has a maximum vehicle gross weight under 1,500 pounds [/ul]
[*]Is classified as a motorhome on your registration[/ul]
[*]Is classified as an Idaho Old Timer or a Classic Vehicle [/ul]
The local ordinances require all 1965 and newer vehicles registered as, or required to be registered as Ada County vehicles, to be tested. [State law requires you to specify the county where you reside as the "domicile county" during the registration process. This "domicile county" is used to determine testing requirements, not the "1A" or other county identifier on the plate.] New vehicles bought from a new car dealer are exempt from testing for the first year. Motorcycles, motorhomes and vehicles under 1500 pounds gross vehicle weight (gross vehicle weight includes the weight of the vehicle plus fuel, passengers and baggage and is generally specified by the manufacturer) are not required to get tests. Vehicles registered with Old Timer and Classic plates are not required to get the emissions test but there are restrictions on the use of vehicles registered with these plates. Farm tractors registered under Idaho Code 49-406A and prorated registrations under Idaho Code 49-437 are also exempt from testing
The bill would allow the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality to test emissions in any state region where pollution levels are close to exceeding the federal health standards and where cars are one of the top two sources. But with the Treasure Valley already exceeding federal ozone standards that could limit road building and add costly restrictions on industry, the debate is mostly about Ada and Canyon counties, where 42 percent of all Idahoans live.
I can't find anything on whether the new laws will be stricter or if they will just copy ADA county. My guess is they will just copy ADA county and we will be free of worry, I hope anyway I don't want Idaho to turn to California even though half of the state is moving here.
Which vehicles have to get an emissions test?
