Default Funny noise

Hard to hear on right side, but pretty noticeable on primary side. Kind of a high pitched light rattle-squeak. It doesn't seem to bean exhaustleak (I just installeda set ofstock pipes), but what do I know....You can hear it when idling and it sounds like its emanating from somewhere above the primary cover. I think I hear it some running tho I wear a lid and have bad hearing. Runs & shifts fine andacting normal otherwise. I don't have the service history, but she's approaching 13K miles.Think it could be the primary chain?

Yea, that'd be my guess. Check the fluid, if that's up to snuff, check the tension on the chain.

Well, It isn't the primary chain. I opened it up and adjusted it a little, but overall it wasn't really loose. After trying a mechanic's stethoscope and not getting much (everything makes noise on one of these), I grabbed the left side muffler near therear mount and that was it.It seems to be moving around atad more than the right, but everything was snug.

When I removed the Rineharts, I didn't replace the shorter Rinehartcenter (above the tranny)bracket with the longer stock one sojust left that clamp off. I figured that must be it, but Ididn't want to go thru all the trouble to remove and replace the whole bracket, so I just fabbed up something longer to attach to the pipe. Didn't fix a thing, but at least I ain't worried about the funny sound anymore.

Sometime I'm amazzed how these things hold together. I guess in 105 years can't help but learn something. I think, "Hell my Granddad might have tightened up something on a Harley a long time ago, somewhere, middle of nowhere".

Met a guy once who said he road all over France in the Great War (WW1) on a Harley, almost like the one I had, except his was Green and Muddy. That was 30 years ago and I was young then. And he was about 80.

My grandfather had a 1916 or so Model J in the early twenties which he rode anywhere he needed wheels to get to. He's been gone a long time now; he'd seen many of my bikes over the years and he liked them all. Somehow I know he'd have liked this one best of all.

I am finding out again, that its the participation an HD requires that is a large part of the charm. These new ones are certainly reliable enough, but you still can't take them for granted (hmmm, wife feels the same way). The shovel required a little too much participation, but I can live with the twin cam.
