I got a question; I removed both tanks from my bike today (99FXST) and when I took off the hose connecting the two tank, gas only poured from the right side tank. I thought this was kind of funny that both sides did not have gas in them. I then tipped the bike upwards just to see if it was not coming out of the left side due to the bike being on the kickstand. I mean, a little gas came out but not enough to fill up a glass. The right side tank poured out about 2.4 gallons. Is this normal or is is me being new to harleys?
2nd Question
I removed the tanks b/c I am installing some Wild 1 (WO500) this weekend but I also wanted to check the filter on top of the petcock. My bike today kept sputtering like it was running out of gas and when I would switch it back and fourth from the main tank to reserve it would keep on running. Is there something wrong with my petcock (the filter was nasty) or maybe the crossover hose.? Maybe the answer to the first question of mine will answer the second question.
It sounds like the crossover tube or fitting is blocked up from what you say. The basic function of it is to equalize the two tanks and if you only had gas in the right one, it isn't working properly then. Maybe replace the hose with a new one and check out the fittings where it attaches to the tanks to make sure they are clear and it should work then. While you are at it clean out and flush the both tanks and petcock/screen too. You may also want to check the filler cap to see if it's a vented one and that it is venting too.
