Does adding the SE air filter lower mpg? Stock pipes and stock ecm. This is on a 2001 bagger.
It seems to me that the efi adjusts the af mix to enrichen it if it senses more air. Any thoughts?
No , i dont think it does. That is what the stage 1 download is for. I have heard it wont run properly at all with a High flow filter and no other changes, but usually everyone is forwarned
and they dont attempt it. Are you running it like that?
The answer to your first question is proable not, but keep in mind that anytime you modife an engines oem confirguration you will be modifing how it performs, most people install the SE air filter for better performance an more horse power , More horse power always equally less MPG .

Now as far as the second comment, no the efi in that year range does not adjust for more air in the combustion chamber, this fuel system is not a close loop system yet as are the newer/ late model h-ds , if you are going to install the air filter &\\;\\\\\\; you don't already have a set of pipes on there i would recommend getting some pipes &\\;\\\\\\; having a down load performed by your dealer or installing some sort of fuel injection module , such as a SE race tuner , power commander etc, that is if you want you r bike to run at its best

There isn't \\; a mass air flow sensor on the Harley....this is where the tuners come in with a SERT or such and tell the ECM there is more air flow (VE Tables) \\;so it can adjust the AFR. \\;
I don't think it's really a valid concern with this mod. \\;Running down the road with the throttle wide open you're certainly going to use more fuel. If you're concerned about fuel economy then you might want to consider not running down the road at wide open throttle. I'm not going to argue with someone that knows far than me about something I know little about, but during normal driving \\;it should mean you're simply using less throttle to do the same thing.
You need to do a milage check and less us know what you come up with . I am curious, and always suspect to what you really need to do as far as these upgrades and mods. \\;
As mentioned without the download your VE tables will be wrong. The VE table is used by the ECM to estimate the mass of air entering the cylinder from conditions in the intake. Without the download it will underestimate the mass of air in the cylinder and supply fuel for the mass it thinks is there which is less than what is actually there. The result is you'll run leaner. You'll run hotter and have less power. It might improve your fuel economy though
