Default Evo troubles

I hope someone on here can help. I recently replaced my cam and tappets on my 1990 FLT because it developed a noise. Turned out to be a tappet had gone bad. I also did an oil change as well. Now when I start it after about a minute or so it starts blowing oil out of the push rod tubes (in the center and at the base of the heads). Thinking that I may have gotten the scavenger gear off a tooth I tore it back down, but everything looked good so I buttoned it back up. I then checked the spring and check ball in the oil pump to make sure it was alright and it was. I started it back up and got the same thing. I have a few Harley mechanic friends so I asked around and no one has a clue what it could be.

IMO it seems to be a tube assembly problem. I would think it would push oil out of the breather before the tubes. I have never seen one leak unless the seal was damaged or rock hard.

Thanks, FXSTDSE2
That was my first thought too, so I replaced the seals again. When I started it back up it did the same thing.

did you install the lifters with the oil holes facing each other? sounds like excess pressure building up at the lifters and not getting out of the tubes

Most every time I had an evo with lifters that cam apart it also took out the oil pump return gears and housing. Did you remove the oil pump to check if any metal had traveled there ?? It could be that the return oil is not leaving the motor fast enough and the excess oil is being forced out by crancase pressure. Also I would recommend that you drain the oil bag and clean out the bottom of the oil bag, for sure there will be metal chips in the bottom. I hear that there is a good indy shop in Richmond ?? have you talked to bernie ?? Good luck

Did the tappet rollers fail? If so you need to get them all out.Was the tappet blocks off and if so are you sure the gaskets are installed correctly. All holes line up?Did you get the correct nose cone gasket and again are you sure its not covered by some sealant. While youre in there check the breather screen and plastic drive gear esp. If its just pushrod covers then pop them off and see if you cut a seal, sometimes a slight spin might remedy the problem.

Well I have to admit that I did not check out the oil pump because it was still holding good oil pressure. Have you ever seen it push oil out in these places? I know Bernie so I'll give him a call.
