01 ultra,16000 miles, tensioners went out at 13000 miles, 11000 stator and regulator went out and replaced and 13500 alternator rotor was replaced. The cam bearings were replace at the same time because a mech. said that was the noise we were hearing but it turned out to be the rotor.Got the bike home ,oil was 5-10 lbs better than before(30-40lbs).The oil was changed 3 times from 11000 to 16000 with mobil 20-50 V-twin.After the bike back from having the bearing replaced we went on a 6 day trip of 100 degree days on the way home a slight tapping was heard.Tapping got louder over the next 1000 miles.Replaced the tappets with new ones. Noise gone, till we took a 400 mile ride on a 50-75 degree day. The Tapping is back after the engine warms up.I got the old tappets out of the box to look them over good, one is darker than the others.........................what do need to do next.
I bought the bike 02/07 with 6700miles on it
help I want to ride
I had the same type noise in m 2000 RK. I replaced lifters, adjusted the push rods, increased oil viscosity. Tapping would always return.
I finally did the roller chain conversion and the tapping has been eliminated.
I have examined a few of the earlier chains and some have a very rough transition from link to link. Combine that with a spring loaded tensioner on a pivot post and you would get some bounce from the tensioner.
I had a nice running EVO until I put in Mobil syn. Started having tappet noise within a few hundred miles. Continued to get worse after 1500 mile oil change. Dumped Mobil syn and installed dino back. Noise has gone away and engine runs better with more power again after only 100 miles or so.
Also, my cylinder base gaskets started leaking now and I blame it all on the syn oil.
I had around 30k on the bike when I switched to synthetic and now wish I hadn't as it's gonna cost me some down time and late hours at night repairing the damages.
are you talking about the primary chain being changed to roller? Isn't stock chain a roller chain?
Up until 2006 the TC88 cams were driven by a flat silent chain with spring loaded tensioners. In 2006 the Dynas were equipped with roller chains and hydraulic tensioners. You can retro fit earlier TC88s with the roller chain setup and cams that have a journal small enough to run in the inner needle bearings.
