I still have my chain and tensioner set-up in my 95" HQ Sport Touring. I also polished any rough edges on the chains when I installed the kit. I only put around 5000km a season on my bike but I like to ride her hard. I also make it a point to open up the cam area every second season to check everything and change the tensioner shoes. Probably overkill, but I have peace of mind....
fint217, That is the route I,m going. My shop sent the crank to Darkhorse to be "trued and glued". And was their words exacltly. Bulletproof. I'm having the 26 gear drives installed. It had the 21s preimplode which were fine and I do not expect my smile to invert with the 26s. Geese, 15 below 0 today. Spring don't fails me now! Doug
Crazy, It seems to be a crap shoot. Some of the guys are going great and others are having trouble. Keep a close eye on them. It always seems that even when I have bad luck I actually am lucky. My motor let go about 200 miles from home and I was changing gears from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd [can't remenber]. A month earlier we were in Wyoming running the limit plus 5. Might be laying out there yet. Anyway, we'll get her fixed now. Hey, whats with sending us this weather man! CMON! Doug
BUSTERK,
You definately can't go wrong with DarkHorse. Top knotch stuff my man. Bulletproof
for sure. As for the weather. We've had a high of -20 to -25 here in Montreal all
week. -30 to -40 counting in the wind chill factor. You know it's really cold when you
go outside and your nostrils stick together. Damn I can't wait for the spring to arrive...
So did you ever find out the "why" of this, 2 camchain failures when 99.9 percent of other bikes do not experience actual breakage would make me want to know exactly what was going on that caused it. Something in your setup was simply not right, these chain/tensioner systems wear out but breakage is very seldom seen. Did your builder come up with an acceptable answer to this? I would want every tolerence on the cases checked before reassembly, lifter bores, crank centerline etc. make sure this is right before you throw good money after bad.
Busterk,
Great, I'm sure you'll be very happy!!!! At least now you're getting a motor built solid from the bottom up!! I say let more reasonable cold continue....my bikes not ready...and the skiing is good here.....ha
Did you ever find out how much runout your crank had?
just happened to me too. hauling *** out of rapid city with 750 miles in front of me and i lost power, got spark, no compression, no leaks. flagged down a trailer and had a 12 pack in me by sioux falls. my mechanic has never seen or heard of an inner cam chain failure. saved the engine, but still cost $1500 to put humpty dumpty back together again. how can i be assured it won't happen again?
