05-09 differences
hello fellow riders,
is there anyone out there that can tell me exactly what they did to the motors of the softails from 05-06. ive talked to a dozen of hd techs and im tired of the people that should know... not exactly knowing.
ive heard the intakes, the throttle bodies, the heads, but not specifics on these, or if there was anything else.
then in 07 they put in a 103 crank to give the motor an extra 6 inches to 96. was that all they changed? and who only knows what theyve done since then.
my dilema is ive got an 05, supposedly the 06 heads are superior, i would like to take a set of 06 heads and port and polish them, as well as enlarging the intake and or the exhaust valves, mostly because its cheaper than buying a set thats already ported.
id also like to put a 50mm throttle body on, but the se book says 06 and newer, i think its because the intake is different, so how do i get around that? and would an 05 ecm work with that if i could get around it
another problem is that ive come across three sets of numbers for 06 heads, and no info as to which one is the best.
or course id do the pistons and jugs and the neccessities to do it right, but right now id just like to know the differences between the 05s thru 09s. just the motors is all i need
if anyone could guide me to direct answers i would greatly appreciate the help.
ride safe, God bless,

You ask a lot for your first thread..
05 to 06 diff is mainly heads and may be lights or something....
The 07's softails have the 96 which is an 88 with a stroked crank, 6 speed, different cam plate, oil pump, hydraulic cam chain tensioners and probably some other crap...
06 heads have better valve springs, valve seats and larger exhaust port than prior years.
So tell us, what is it you want to do with your bike? Why does this matter to you... To be concerned about 06 heads on an 05 bike and ECM...?? Are you trying to build something and achieve a particular hp and tq???

Don't fully understand why your so concerned about the 06 heads bein better when you want to have your heads reworked anyway, cause it won't make no difference! Just rework your 05 heads. Just curious, who's doin the work? (head work)
saving money is what matters, if I can redo a set of stock heads to the equivalency of the $1400 screamin eagles, or any other high perf part, for half the price doesnt it make sense?
take a 2009 screamin eagle parts catalog, and the heads are compared to 06s. the 50mm throttle body is "a 4mm increase over the '06 original equipment throttle body". it doesnt say what the 05's had in comparison.
my buddys got an 06. he's got a wimmer, and a set of martin brothers stepped pipes. mine has a se stage 1 air cleaner and a set of samsons with torque cones, and the stage 1 download. His bike just flat out flies, even with a 200# chic on back and his extra 130# over me he pulls away everytime. 96" bikes with air cleaners and pipes, and fuel remappings cant keep up with him. it was dynoed at 84h/82tq.
i spose i shouldve mentioned all that up front, i apologize for that. Ive read of alot of bikes with 95" kits having 100 horse or more. i relize that torque matters more than horses. Id like to go 103 just for the fact that I could go bigger later on by just changing out the pistons and jugs, and cams, but I dont hear many good things about the 103s.over all i would just like around 100 horse with the potential for more easily if needed.
the reason...yeah i want to smoke em for once, and see the look on his face when i back off and let him catch up. that and a better throttle response for when i want to go. but I also want keep the fuel efficiency reasonable, and still be on pump gas.
ive got time to think about, and look into head work and setups, because of the warranty. if I put a set of non factory ported heads, or non authorized mechanics work on the motor its all void.
I just wanted some ideas, starting with what has been done to bikes and use those differences to my advantage on the street, and my pocket book, and I came here.
i apologize for the long read, I like to talk about my passions,
thanks for the help,

Is your Bud's bike the one that dynoed at 84 hp & 82 TQ? What model are both bikes? 200 lb "chic" + 130 lb on top of you is 330 lbs. That is a lot of weight difference and should come into play. Are you sure his is just stage 1? Later, Calvin.
