I have been thinking of installing a 103 stageIV kit in my bike. Today I rode a bike with a new 103 stage IV kit installed. Kit was just installed so I took it easy on the bike. It seemed to run good but I noticed a lot more engine noise than my stock bike. In general are the 103 kits with 10.5 forged pistons noisy? This bike had 251 cams instead of the 260 cams.
no
the noiseyou probley herd was the stiffer spring pack in the heads or roller rockers.
could be a combo of both 590 cam will make a litle noise also with out knowing the specifics cant really say also adjustable pushrods are sometimes needed to adjust the valve train down a little.
also a bike with a fairing will tend to make more noise then a bike with out.
if it was me i would call a reputable builder such as JD's cycleworks or hillside and get some advice from them on a build. more bang for the buck and it is very reliable also

after my head work and hi lift cams, I noticed the the valvetrain was alittle noiser, but I can hear my Mikunis slider rattling louder than the engine most of the time.
My engine was noisy. Running Woods 7H.
Per Bob woods I turned the lifter adjusters (S&S, 32 tpi) 4.5 turnes down instead of 3.0 down. This targets 0.05 instead of 0.1 for lifter travel. I will use S&S limiters next time I open this thing up.
This does sorta the same thing.
Also running Jagg oil cooler and Amsoil 20-50. Amsoil vis is towards the high side of the spects.
Might check out Red Line 20-60 as it gets hotter around here in SE Texas.
I'm sure it was O.K. just wanted to chaeck with you guys. It sounded like my wifes sportsted sounded. I think I'm going with the same kit. Now I just need to decide wich pipe.
Could also be excessive rocker arm axial clearance. .025 is maximum as per manual. I tightened mine to .004 and even with roller rockers it is way quieter than stock.
Mopar have same set-up , my guess that bike did not have roller rockers, mine doesn't either. Not real noisy but engine noise louder than stock, no real suprise in that, as higher compression, higher lift cams and forged pistons will always make things louder. Have been told that rollers will quiet things down, have also been told rollers will make things louder.... go figure!!

There's no physical reason that rollers will quiet things down in a 0 lash hydraulic system but if the hydraulics aren't 100% coupled with a bit more tip inertia and clearances on the rollers it could make things noisier. At least that's how I see it.

I think you are absolutly right.
There is so much spring pressure and agressive ramps that the valve train has trouble going up and then closing easy.
Valve closing is, I bet, where a lot of the noise comes from.
