Default Thunderheader trouble...

Have 06 Night Train with ceramic black Thunderheader... pipe started to discolor after a few years of use. Sent pipe to a place a friend recommended to have it re-coated. The place said the coating they use will tolerate the heat. Put the pipe back on, fired up the bike, melted the new coat right off. Does anyone know the degree of heat coming out of the heads? Also, looking up ceramic-coating in MA I'm coming up short. Anyone know of a reputable ceramic coating place?

Probably about 1200-1400 Degree F into the exhaust pipe. That is enough to melt aluminum but in the head it is just a instant. Then the wonderful cooling intake and also the whole engine is cooling too fast to melt, we hope. But the exhaust pipe lives in that all the time. Exhause valve gets hot some pretty much.

I use Krylon high heat header paint on them 2 times a season. Works great and only cost 10 bucks and an hours work. If you want the best way look at jet hot coatings.

Buy the heat shields from them and get those coated. Then you wont have that prob. at the header. My .22 cents... thats what we do at our shop.

1. coat the pipe
2. then coat heat shields.
